What to do when weather breaks

A weather break changes the problem from completing a route to making the next safe decision. Rain, wind, cold, reduced visibility or thunder can combine with distance and tiredness faster than a forecast summary suggests. The useful response is calm, specific and conservative: know where the group is, reduce exposure and stop trying to rescue the original itinerary.

Notice the change in context

Watch the ground, visibility, wind and the group as well as the sky. A trail becoming slippery or a person becoming cold can matter before rain feels dramatic. Compare what you see with the plan you prepared, and accept that the plan may no longer fit.

Add protection before the stop

Put on protective layers while people can still use their hands comfortably. Secure loose items and protect a phone and navigation materials from water. Do not wait for everyone to be soaked before changing clothing or discussing the return.

Choose the simplest retreat

Use a known route back, not a shortcut selected under pressure. Keep the party together and move at a pace that avoids slips and exhaustion. If official information indicates a restriction or you cannot confidently identify the route, reduce the objective further.

Avoid time-recovery decisions

Skipping a break, rushing downhill or continuing to a “nearby” destination often makes a weather decision worse. Tell the group plainly that returning early is the plan, not a failure. Reassess only from a safer, lower-commitment position.

What to do when thunder or visibility makes progress uncertain

Do not continue toward exposed terrain simply because you are close to it. Turn toward the known return, keep track of the group, and seek emergency assistance through 112 if there is immediate danger or someone cannot continue safely. Give the best precise location you have and describe conditions.
